The snow shovel signifies the fact that on Februwas the first snow day at MIT in eight years. The coffee cup is a tribute to those all-nighters that MIT students are known for. Also, you can see he is holding a coffee cup and a snow shovel. For the Laborer, you can see that he is wearing a raccoon hat representing us as pioneers in many new institution policies. Every class designs the Laborer and the Scholar to fit around certain events that happened to that particular class.

The second girl represents the artist values in all of us. The first girl is suppose to represent community service. On the bottom of the class shank, there are four people standing front of the entrance to Building 7. Also, there is a shooting star, the logo of STS-107, the last crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia. In the Starry Night skyline, you can see Mars because it was the closest that it has ever been to Earth in thousands of years. Now comes the cool stuff that kicks ass because I'm an Aero/Astro major. You can see The Green Building, which is the tallest building in Cambridge, the new Stata Center, as well as the Great Dome on Building 10 and the Little Dome on Building 7. The blocks symbolize the passing of the old grading system of Pass/No Record your Freshman year to the new one of Pass/No Record your first semester. Then finally in the water, you can see blocks reading A=B=C sinking. On the bottom of the bezel, you can see a bunch of ivy leaves under Timmy representing that MIT is crushing the eight Ivy League schools.

There is also a little Gnome hiding behind the tree representing the Gnome Hack we had here. Also, on the tree you can see a drawing of the Infinite Corridor which is the longest Corridor in the world. The phrase means "I Hate This Fucking Place." which is true sometimes. The first would be our famous phrase that the administration hates "IHTFP". In the Starry Night sky, you should be able to be the Chapel spire and a strand of DNA, reminding us of the increasing moral and philosophical responsibility that we had have. You can see that he holds a diploma and a globe to signify that we as MIT graduates will play a big part in changing the world. Timmy the Beaver is suppose to be happy, confident, and wise. It me fill you in on the details of the Brass Rat. Well the Class of 2006's Brass Rat has to be the most unique ring ever designed for a class here at MIT. If you don't know, here at MIT we call our class ring, the BRASS RAT, because our mascot Timmy the Beaver is always on the Bezel of the ring. This is evident by our class ring that premiered this past Saturday night.

Well actually I'm in the best Aeronautical & Astronautics Department in the world at the best engineering school in THE UNIVERSE !!!!īut honestly, my class of 2006 kicks ass. But I have to literally say that I go to the coolest and most awesome school on the face of the planet. MIT legend says that the ring is one of the most recognized rings in the world, facilitating alumni connections everywhere from job interviews to the supermarket.I know that I've only been here at MIT for a year and a half. Upon graduation, the ring is flipped around so that the graduating year along with the MIT skyline is seen, showing that you have entered the real world, and have the perspective to look back at your time at MIT. While still an undergraduate, students wear the Brass Rat such that the MIT seal and motto and the Boston skyline is viewed, reminding you that you're still a student. At Commencement, MIT students wait not to move their tassles from one side to the other, but rather for the moment when they flip the ring around. The Brass Rat is also a part of MIT graduation tradition. The year ends with a delivery event, where every sophomore finally receives the Brass Rat. In a typical year, 90% of all students will purchase the ring. The unveiling of the ring design is one of the most exciting moments of an MIT student's college years.įollowing the premiere, sophomores happily line up in MIT's Lobby 10 to view and purchase their very own Brass Rat. In the spring term, the sophomores - brimming with curiosity - come together for a grand event: the Ring Premiere. A student design committee incorporates secret icons and codes special to their class year. However, each class's brass rat is unique in its design. Every Brass Rat includes elements standard to every ring: a beaver on the bezel, the MIT seal on one shank and the class year of graduation on the other shank.
